So since my girlfriend is going in for surgery next week, we decided it was a good idea to get out of town this weekend so we could relax for a couple of days. Even though Kamloops wasn’t our first choice, it was the best place to get an affordable suite with a hot tub. I’m writing this from our hotel room right now and if I wasn’t afraid of getting electrocuted, I’d post it from the hot tub. We went for a bit of a drive today (up Westsyde road till just about its end – see the Trip image on Flickr) and the strolled through Riverside park. Spore is an upcoming gaming from Will Wright, the creator of Sim City and The Sims.

Spore is, at first glance, an evolution game: the player molds and guides a single-celled species across many generations, until it becomes intelligent, at which point the player begins molding and guiding a society into a spacefaring civilization. Spore’s main innovation, the basis of its scope and open-endedness, is that Wright has returned to procedural generation.

I thought I was done with these Ajax start pages. I was sure that Netvibes was what I was going to stick with. Well, then someone posted a comment that changed things. Enter Pageflakes. Same ideas as the other ones, little prettier, more features, and the ability to create your own flakes (widgets). Screenshots below:

Ok, ok, I’ve been obsessed with these Ajax powered start pages. But I think this one’s a keeper. If for nothing more than a new RSS feed reader. Netvibes has all the common features, RSS reader, to-do lists, weather widget, email checker, and more. They’ve also planned a number of nice features for the future. The layout is not as customizable as Protopage for example, but it’s more stable and reliable. Who knew the French could pull something like this off! Check it out, I highly recommend it.

Yesterday I blogged about Goowy. While it’s a pretty neat service it’s still a bit too buggy for everyday use. At least for me. So I decided to check out Protopage. I felt the need to state why I continue to participate in this weird exercise called blogging. Maybe I should define what blogging means first. Wikipedia defines blogging as

A blog is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. The term blog is a shortened form of weblog or web log. Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called “blogging”.

So why do I keep adding articles to my blog? Heck, 80% of them aren’t even mine. I probably didn’t even discover the information in them. Most likely I found them in someone else’s blog, or on a news site, or even in a podcast.  Still, I feel compelled to take the 3 minutes out of my day and copy and paste some content into a form and hit the Publish button.

I believe that my main motivation for this blog is not singular: I like to be able to go back a few months and see what was on my mind at that time. I enjoy the fact that my blog is something to tinker with. I like involving my friends who I do not see personally very often in what’s going on in my life. And finally, some things are just too cool, disgusting or weird to not write about.

Blogging also gives me something to do during my lunch hour. I have a lot of RSS feeds that I read or at least skim daily for anything that strikes my interest. So why not share it on here? Some may think it pointless, but I can’t wait to look over my posts in a few years time and see what happened then. Anything I can do to keep less stuff in my brain.

If you’re interested in blogging, I would suggest staying away from free services such as MSN spaces, Myspace, or even Blogger. Even though some are better (Blogger) than other (Myspace), I would suggest WordPress. Either run your own server and domain (you can get them free) or sign up for a free blog.

Google has been in the news a lot recently, both being accused of producing mediocre, constantly beta, products (see Google Video), and folding to pressure by governments. While they’re fighting the US government to not release search results, they are complying with censorship rules imposed by the Chinese government. Whether you like Google or not, here’s an alternative search engine that I really like:

Clusty is a metasearch engine developed by Vivísimo which offers clusters of results. Clusty adds new features and a new interface to the previous Vivisimo clustering web metasearch. Different tabs also offer metasearches for news, jobs in partnership with Indeed, U.S. government info, pet owner info and blogs. Special tabs can be added to search eBay, Wikipedia, or Slashdot. Customized tabs allow users to select sources for their own metasearch to create personalized tabs.

Today’s my last day off from work before getting back into the groove. I’m on the couch, it’s 4pm and I’ve only been awake for about 30 minutes. I put a load of dishes in the dishwasher, one of many to be done today, in addition to all the bags of garbage that need taking out. I thought I’d feel a little bit more refreshed after nearly two weeks of vacation time but considering I spent most of it being sick like a dog, I’m just barely more refreshed than before. Oh well, a new year means a new set of vacation days in 2006. I should have at least 3 weeks of vacation time this year. The first order of business will be to visit my buddy Tibby in Vancouver for at least a few days. Can’t wait for that. My girl is really itching to get out of town for a little while. I agree with that, but I want to wait a bit till some financial things are settled. All the bills after Christmas are always twice as hard to pay. Afterall, spreading all that Christmas cheer has taken a major hit on both our wallets.

And speaking of wallets, the first thing that greeted me this morning was a notice from our Landlord that our rent will be increased by $22.20 starting April 1, 2006. Technically they’re in violation of the required 3 months noticed since the letter did not arrive here until today. Heck, the example on the official form even stated that if date that the letter was mailed + 5 days is anywhere in January, the earliest a rent increase can take effect is May 1st. But is an extra month of $22.20 really worth the hassle of complaining? Especially to a Landlord that is one of the larger real estate companies in town and has no idea how to even spell my name? Probably not.

In any case, the biggest trouble will be getting to sleep tonight at an early enough hour to not look totally hung over at work in the morning. Wish me luck.

By combining advanced algorithms with reports about misleading pages from a number of sources, Safe Browsing is often able to automatically warn you when you encounter a page that’s trying to trick you into disclosing personal information.

I can’t download it from their site right now so I haven’t tested it yet, but I’ll post a comment once I have.

Very interesting. Didn’t seem like they arrested anyone though, just searched them. Reminder to self: Watch the news tonight.

This is now the 3rd or 4th flat tire I’ve had on my new car in the past year. It’s really starting to piss me off. I refuse to believe that I just have crappy tires. It must be the fact that my car spends 90% of its time parked on crappy-ass gravel parking lots with lots of debry such as nails, metal pieces, and god knows what else, all intend on poking my tires. I’m sick of it! I’m going to put my name in for the next available underground parking spot at work. And there goes another $20 getting the tire fixed (if they can).

So a while ago I bought a new razer. I thought about just getting my usual Gillette one, you know, the one with the 3 blades. But sadly I was convinced by the commercials to try out the new Shick Quattro. 4 blades, must be better than 3. Not!
Here’s the problem, the 4 blades are so narrow and wedged closely together, that, especially with the little protective wires across them, they become useless. Never in my life have I pulled a razer across my face only to find the same amount of stubble as before. The first time it happened I must have looked so confused… Now granted, it works fine for about 3 shaves. At that point it becomes impossible to clean the hairs out from within the narrowly spaced blades.
My conclusion: Going with the 3 bladed Gillette again next time. Now, where can I get one for free?

Last night was all but fun. My girl had some shortness of breath and some chest pain and after it didn’t subside, we went to the hospital. After the usual 5 hours of sitting around (I swear, the guy who got his leg shredded walked faster than those nurses), we went home with her being entitled the “Mistery Woman”. Oh well, 5 hours of sleep later, I’m at work, she’s home sleeping. Hope she’s feeling better today…

After the usual 5 hours of sitting around (I swear, the guy who got his leg shredded walked faster than those nurses), we went home with her being entitled the “Mistery Woman”. Oh well, 5 hours of sleep later, I’m at work, she’s home sleeping. Hope she’s feeling better today…
