I have to confess something…

I’m not posting this entry to review or give my impressions of the latest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. I’m really just posting this here because I felt that the intro sequence would make such a stellar image on the front page

Truth be told, I enjoyed the movie but it definitely strayed from the traditional 007 style movies. I don’t think there was a single cool gadget. Oh well.

Forget about Steve Job’s keynote speech. Never mind Bill Gates’, either. If you see one speech, if you watch one movie or documentary this year, if you care about this planet we live on at all, watch An Inconvenient Truth. Never mind that Al Gore got screwed out of his presidency, whether you like him or not, this is too important to ignore. There is some truly astonishing predictions here that if they come true, and so far they all have, could leave cities like New York, San Francisco, the whole of the Netherlands, and more under water in as soon as ten years. Please, do yourself a favor and educate yourself, and then start to change.

Orb MyCasting – I’ve seen the Future!

What is a MyCast from Orb? Well they have a great description and many details on their website so I won’t go into the details. But let it suffice to say that with this software, running on my home PC, I can view all of my videos, podcasts, music files, photos, and anything that’s either a video, audio, or media file, from anywhere I can access the web.

This stuff even works on my Dell Axim pocket pc. It’s somehow amazing that I was able to walk around the office, watching “The Office” in the palm of my hand, knowing it was streaming via the wireless LAN and then via the Internet, all the way from my computer at home. The current version is a little buggy, it tends to crash but it does a great job when it’s running. Streaming quality is excellent, of course dependent on your network connection, and the new flash player allows for even more flexibility than before.

I would highly recommend this for anyone who is on the go a lot and just doesn’t have enough time at home to watch their media stored on their PC.

Even if you don’t play Battlefield 2 you’ll still enjoy these movies. Created entirely in the game and using some hilarious sound tracks and voice overs from such comedies as Monty Python, these are truly entertaining. The first one is quite a bit funnier than the second one, so I actually suggest you watch Mine 2 first and leave the best for last.

Real Life Simpsons Intro

This is really funny. It’s a video remake of the Simpsons intro clip. That’s right; real people acting out the actions that happen in the cartoon. It’s quite well done even though the actors could have looked a little more like the Simpsons, but I suspect that this was a rather low budget project.

Obeying the Speed Limit

The story is this. A group of college students got together and decided to hold I-285 traffic to the posted speed limit (55). (I-285 makes a complete circle around Atlanta.) The Atlanta Journal quotes a spokesman for the DOT as saying that if the students werenâ€™t blocking emergency vehicles and were going the speed limit, â€œthey didnâ€™t do a thing wrong.â€? He added, â€œIn Atlantaâ€¦ we expect the people going 75 to move over so the people going 95 can have the right of way.â€?

Definitely take the time to watch this video.

Superbowl Commercials

Many of us here in Canada, who were not lucky enough to have some sort of access to satellite TV, missed out on all the cool superbowl commercials aired on the American TV stations. However, iFilm was nice enough to post them all right here. Make sure you have time for at least half an hour because there is a shit ton of them. I’ve posted a few of my favourites below.

Lord of War

I just finished watching the moviesmovie Lord of War. I must say, I quite enjoyed it. Nicholas Cage portraits an arms dealer and the story is told from his perspective, recounting past events. It’s entertaining and has a morale to the story. The credits show the top 5 arms dealers in the world, which incidentally happen to be the 5 permanent members of the UN security council. Hmmm.

This film charts the rise and fall of Yuri Orlov, from his early days in the early 1980s in Little Odessa, selling guns to mobsters in his local neighbourhood, through to his ascension through the decade of excess and indulgence into the early 90s, where he forms a business partnership with an African warlord and his psychotic son. The film also charts his relationship through the years with his younger brother, his marriage to a famous model, his relentless pursuit by a determined federal agent and his inner demons that sway between his drive for success and the immorality of what he does.

I highly recommend watching this movie, it’s worth the $5 of rental, or maybe even the price of the DVD.

Why George Lucas Sold Pixar To Steve Jobs

It was twenty years ago this month that George Lucas sold Pixar to Steve Jobs. This short story explains why.

Mr. Lucas, of Star Wars fame, needed to raise cash to settle the divorce and decided to sell a smallish piece of his Lucas Film empire. Steve Jobs was interested but deemed Lucas’ original asking price 30 million dollars, too high. Faced with the aforementioned need for liquidity, Lucas decided to let the company go at fire sale prices. Fire sale prices were exactly what Steve Jobs was looking for, so he traded ten million greenbacks for the company that would later be named Pixar.

…has been an interesting one. Saturday was my brother’s birthday. He’s now 23 years old and showed up for dinner at my parents totally hung over. Poor guy didn’t look so good, even after he threw up in my parents’ toilet, but hey, that’s what you get for partying all night before

Otherwise it’s been a pretty relaxing weekend. Finally got my car’s oil changed on Friday, watched The Cave and The Transporter 2, got my Legion of Merit ribbon in Battlefield 2, my buddy Tibby keeps creeping up on my global score as well as awards in BF2, and I tried out a bit of a free trial for Guildwars. Now it’s a little bit of Erin Brockovich and then some more BF2 before getting a good night’s sleep.

Well, another movie we got for free thanks to Rogers Video’s policy. I wasn’t too sure about Christian Bale as Batman but in the end I was quite impressed with the movie. The guy does some good acting with a mask on Probably my favourite Batman movie of all time. I enjoyed the fact that for once there was a great action movie without some kind of romance trying to squeeze into the story. Also very interesting was the introduction of how Batman came to be. I would definitely recommend this movie!Movies

We rented this on Friday night after getting it for free from Rogers Video. Here’s a tip: Look at all their new releases that are guaranteed to be there or they’re free; if they’re not there, get a free credit for them. Anyways, the movie, quite long, was very entertaining to me. It’s probably not everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoy the setting. Click the link above for more info.Movies

Waiting… (2005/I)
Me and my girl watched this movie last night and it was quite entertaining. The story is all about a bunch of guys working at a restaurant and the rules and games involved in it. Though it was quite predictable and the scenery never changed much from the restaurant, it was good for a lot of laughs. Lots of swearing, drug use and some male frontal nudity (yes…) definitely warrant its R rating, so don’t take your kids. I for one though really got a laugh out of some of the frustrations encountered by the waiters. In summary, if you’ve got the time and you’re looking for a funny, relaxing movie to see, give this one a try. Just think about what might happen the next time you send back food in a restaurant…. don’t be too picky…Movies
